The Original Duckhead x Meri Meri collaboration brings together two independent brands united by thoughtful design, sustainability, and joy. Designed for children and families, the Duckling x Meri Meri umbrellas offer a refreshing alternative to throwaway gifts - just in time for the holiday season.
We spoke with Morgan Cros, Founder of Original Duckhead, and Meredithe Stuart-Smith, Founder and President of Meri Meri, about sustainability, children’s design, and what makes a gift truly last.
Where It All Started
Morgan Cros:
“Working for established brands taught me the importance of understanding every aspect of the supply chain and production process. I saw firsthand how many companies prioritize speed and cost over quality and sustainability.”
That experience became the foundation for Original Duckhead.
“This experience made me determined to do things differently with Original Duckhead - to really understand our materials, build lasting relationships with our manufacturers, and create products that are built to last rather than built to be replaced.”
Across the Atlantic, Meri Meri began somewhere closer to home.
Meredithe Stuart-Smith:
“I grew up near the headquarters of Hallmark in Kansas City. I loved making cards and would proudly display my designs in the window hoping someone might notice.”
“Years later, as a young mom in Los Angeles, I returned to the kitchen table making handmade cards and selling them to local shops.”
“What started as a small, homegrown project, slowly began to flourish. When Bergdorf Goodman bought the collection it was definitely a pinch-me moment.”
Sustainability (Without the Buzzwords)
For both founders, sustainability isn’t a trend - it’s a way of working.
Morgan:
“Sustainability isn't just a buzzword for us - it's fundamentally how we think about business.”
“We believe in creating products that last for decades, not seasons.”
“Our umbrellas are designed to be durable, which is why we offer a two year warranty as well as an upcycling program.”
Meri Meri takes the same long-view approach - especially when designing for children.
Meredithe:
“We put a lot of thought into making things that last and can be enjoyed again and again.”
“Many pieces… are designed to be packed away and enjoyed again.”
“Our knitted toys and baby accessories are made from organic cotton and meant to be treasured keepsakes.”
Designing for Children
Designing for kids comes with responsibility - and a lot of imagination.
Morgan:
“What excites me most is introducing young people to the idea that everyday objects can be both beautiful and sustainable.”
“Children have such a natural appreciation for whimsy and storytelling, and The Duckling umbrellas capture that perfectly.”
That instinct for play has always shaped Meri Meri.
Meredithe:
“When I started my business designing greetings cards, I noticed because they were so playful, they were being used for kids.”
“There was a big gap in the children’s party market for more inspiring and better-designed party products.”
“Nothing felt imaginative or well-designed enough and I knew I could create something better.”
Craft, Detail, and Doing Things Properly
Both brands are passionate about details - the kind you feel, not just see.
Meredithe:
“Some of our designers have been with me for decades and their creativity and experience are at the heart of everything we do.”
“The frill on a tutu, the shimmer of a mermaid costume, the softness of a knitted toy, all of it has to spark delight.”
Morgan sees that same philosophy in umbrella-making.
Morgan:
“Our umbrellas are handcrafted using traditional techniques that have been refined over generations.”
“We use stronger ribs, more durable canopy materials, and hand-stitch key stress points for longevity.”
“Each handle is carved individually, so no two are exactly alike.”
Why This Collaboration Works
Ask either founder why this partnership feels so natural, and the answers mirror each other.
Morgan:
“Meri Meri shares our commitment to thoughtful design and quality.”
“There's something magical about creating umbrellas specifically for children.”
Meredithe:
“Duckhead has amazing attention to detail - I love the handle and how it fits with the overall design and quality.”
“Like us, Duckhead is independent, focused on quality and believes products should be joyful and made to last.”
Gifting That Actually Lasts
As gifting season approaches, both founders agree on one thing: longevity matters.
Meredithe:
“I’ve always felt what a sad moment it is when decorations have to come down after the party!”
Morgan:
“We believe in creating products that last for decades, not seasons.”
It’s a shared rejection of throwaway culture — and a quiet argument for sustainable gifts that stay in use.
What Makes Moments Memorable
Finally, the conversation turns to celebration.
Meredithe:
“I wanted a way to be creative and still do the school pick up.”
Morgan:
“Some of my most memorable parties have been those unexpected moments when it starts raining and everyone huddles together under umbrellas - there's something magical about weather bringing people closer together!”
