A Moment That Means More
Every year on April 22nd, Earth Day invites us to pause - to reflect on the impact we’re having on the planet, and the role we can all play in protecting it.
But for us, it’s more than a moment.
It’s a reminder of why Original Duckhead exists in the first place and why the choices we make, as a business and as individuals, matter every single day.
What Is Earth Day?
First celebrated in 1970, Earth Day began as a global movement to raise awareness about environmental issues.
Today, it’s recognised around the world bringing together individuals, communities, and businesses with a shared goal: to protect our planet for future generations.
It’s not just about awareness anymore. It’s about action.
From small everyday changes to large-scale innovation, Earth Day encourages all of us to do what we can wherever we are.
Why Earth Day Matters To Us
Original Duckhead was built on a simple but powerful idea:
Everyday products can, and should, be made better.
The umbrella industry has long been dominated by disposable design. Cheap materials, short lifespans, and a cycle of constant replacement.
We wanted to challenge that.
Instead of creating umbrellas that are used briefly and thrown away, we set out to design products that are:
- Built to last
- Made responsibly
- Designed with intention
Earth Day is a chance to reflect on that mission and to hold ourselves accountable to it.
Turning Waste Into Something Better
One of the most tangible ways we bring that mission to life is through materials.
Each Original Duckhead umbrella canopy is made from post-consumer recycled plastic bottles - transforming waste into something functional, durable, and designed to be used again and again.
To date, we’ve repurposed:
Almost 9 million plastic bottles 🎉
That’s millions of bottles diverted from landfill and oceans - given a second life as something useful.
And we’re not stopping there.
Our goal is to reach 25 million bottles repurposed by 2030.
It’s one step in a much bigger journey, but it’s a step that matters.
Designing For Longevity Not Landfill
Sustainability isn’t just about materials, it’s about how long something lasts.
An umbrella that breaks after a few uses creates more waste than one that lasts for years.
That’s why we focus on:
- Durable frames
- High-quality construction
- Timeless design
- Repair-conscious thinking
Because the most sustainable product is the one you don’t need to replace.
Holding Ourselves Accountable
Last year, we became a certified B Corporation, something we’re incredibly proud of.
B Corp certification recognises businesses that meet high standards of:
- Social impact
- Environmental responsibility
- Transparency
- Accountability
But more importantly, it’s not a finish line.
It’s a commitment to keep improving.
Because sustainability isn’t about being perfect, it’s about doing better, consistently.
Giving Back Beyond Our Products
Our responsibility doesn’t stop at what we make.
As members of 1% for the Planet, we donate 1% of our annual revenue to environmental organisations working to protect and restore ecosystems around the world.
It’s one way we can support the broader movement and contribute to change beyond our own supply chain.
Looking Ahead
Earth Day is a reminder that there’s always more to do.
Whether it’s:
- Improving materials
- Reducing waste
- Extending product life
- Supporting environmental initiatives
We’re constantly evolving, because better should never stand still.

Small Choices, Real Impact
Earth Day reminds us that change doesn’t come from one big moment, it comes from millions of small decisions.
What we buy. What we use. What we choose to keep.
At Original Duckhead, we believe even something as everyday as an umbrella can be part of that change.
Because protecting the planet shouldn’t be complicated, it should be built into the things we use every day.
